Doodle for Google

2021

The purpose of the Doodle for Google project was to create our own version of the Google logo based off the given theme. With the theme of “I am strong because…” I themed my project off of the idea of inspiration given that I find inspiration to be a major source of my own personal strength. Since I gather inspiration from everywhere in life, I aimed to create a sense of whimsical imagination to display the surge of imaginative ideas I tend to have when feeling inspired.

Creative Process

Given the theme of “I am strong because…” I had to choose what topic to base off of the theme, for which I chose inspiration since it is a major source of my own personal strength as it makes me feel encouraged to keep pursuing my passions and enjoy the things I love. The project required having the word “Google” spelled out somehow as well, for which I placed a large golden letter in each of the picture frames, with each frame possessing elements that represent a source of inspiration. I kept much up for interpretation as the goal was to allow for the viewer to be inspired themselves and let their imagination think up their own explanations. However, I did aim for specific sources of some of my own inspirations, as from left to right I represented: the ocean and beach, culinary arts, nature and the wild, music, traveling, and dreams.

Tools & Elements of Design

Utilizing Paint Tool Sai and a Wacom Intuos drawing tablet, as usual, I created my illustrations in the same manor that I would traditionally on paper. Primarily using only the brush and eraser tools, I also utilized layers to allow for me to separate the lineart from the sketch, shading, and color from each other. As shown below, I had initially started off with a different presentation of my inspiration theme, which was a duo of anonymous people on a train observing a land of inspiration before them. However, not only did I struggle to find a way to integrate the Google logo clearly into it, I also felt as though it was a bit too cluttered and could not clearly represent my theme. Learning from this struggle, I was able to get a better idea of what would later become my final product, as I used the picture frames to show a variety of sources of inspiration, rather than just one big, crowded picture of multiple varying inspirations. That being said, this final version better utilized the elements and principles of design, especially when it came to alignment with choosing how I would space out each picture frame in the illustration.

Performance Evaluation

Since my topic was rather broad and vague, it allowed for much creative freedom as I aimed to inspire the observer to feel inspired to have creative thoughts as well. Since I was able to illustrate many things that I love and care about in my life, I had lots of fun doing so. Despite spending a long while on my original variation of the project, I am glad I made the mistakes I did because they proved to be valuable lessons that I was able to use to make a much better executed final product. This also reminded me for my future endeavors to plan my drawings much more loosely and roughly so I do not need to worry about losing hours or days of work over something that proved to be poorly executed. Since then, I have been doing just that and it has proved to help me be much more efficient in my time and create much better final products.
