Senior Project

2022 - 2023

As one of the final and biggest projects of our senior year, my class was assigned to find a client ourselves and learn to communicate with them and meet their needs. In my case, I worked with the Hoboken Citizens Club in Milford, MA to create them a website from scratch, logo, and other digital products in order to update their online presence.

Tools and Process

Due to the large scope of this project, there was a very long concept development phase. First, I discussed with my client what it was that they wanted, what I could offer, and anything else they found to be important to add. After proposing my project idea to them, they specified that they would love a calendar feature for their website as people often have trouble keeping up with their upcoming events. Once I knew what they needed, I sketched out my ideas for logos, social media ads, an updated Facebook page, welcome video, and website. Upon having my sketches approved, I chose the variations they liked best and created color comps and wireframes for them accordingly. This phase was completed in Paint Tool Sai for coloring the logos and Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Indesign for creating the wireframes. Though this concept development phase took awhile, I found that it greatly helped in the long run with keeping track of all the various pieces this

project involved.

Learning Experience

This project proved to be a very big learning experience for me overall, especially since this was my first time finding a client and working with them entirely on my own. With that said, I was incredibly nervous for a lot of the communication process, even more so in the beginning. However, this dwindled over time as I got more experience with talking to the various people I worked with. Keeping in mind my client's target audience, I had to remind myself that the products were intended for an older audience. With that said, the colors needed to contrast well, text needed to be larger and more legible, and so on. As this lead to the products being more simple, the execution process ended up being quick and easy for me. Since my client didn't have a specific idea for what they wanted, it gave be a lot of creative freedom, which I found to be quite fun.

Performance Evaluation

Overall, I felt that my improvement mainly surrounded my communication skills. It was a long process of trial and error, learning to work through periods of slow communication and working through contacting different people through different means. Throughout the project I have contacted people through

in-person meetings, text, email, phone calls, and even messages on the Milford town website. While my nerves and differing schedules got in the way of communication sometimes, I pursued and learned from the experience. With that said, I feel I still have a long way to go in getting used to working with clients, but after this project I feel that my improvement is tangible.

As this is one of very few websites I have created, I feel that with more experience I could improve on my web design skills. Apart from that, the rest of the products proved to be little to no struggle for me. Changes I made to the products were primarily a result of advice from teachers and changes requested by my client, though these were few and far between.

My Senior Project proved to be a learning experience in ways that were quite different from most projects I have completed for school. Rather than learning in regards to technical or design skills, I mainly learned about how to communicate with a variety of people, keep an even closer eye on time management, and overall how to work along with varying schedules between those I worked with and my own.
