Infographic / Motion Graphic

2022

This project concerned informing the audience of the critical endangerment of the North American right whale. Created primarily with Adobe Illustrator and Premiere Pro, the project consisted of two segments: an infographic poster and motion graphic video.

Tools and Process

This research-heavy project involved finding factual evidence for a chosen topic. For mine, I researched the critical endangerment of the North American right whale. My research was conducted online, sourcing official organizations such as NOAA, IUCN, WWF, IWC, and others.

The first segment of this project was the infographic poster. It involved creating graphics in Adobe Illustrator and was later printed out into a physical poster. Prior to creating the finalized graphics, the poster was outlined via a wireframe, which was made in Adobe Indesign.

Secondly, assets from the infographic were used to construct a motion graphic video. This was created in Adobe Premiere Pro using the assets created in Illustrator. While some assets were not used, most were animated and presented in an orderly fashion for the audience to follow. Music was also added to contribute to the solemn tone.

Learning Experience

This project allowed for me to gain great experience with Adobe Illustrator and graphic design. The more I worked on my graphics, the faster and more efficient I got. Creating a wireframe prior to the final product proved to significantly help me simplify and organize the layout. I will most likely implement wireframing techniques into my future projects. Since this was my first time making an infographic, I learned the process of presenting information in an easy-to-understand manner that could spread awareness of my topic. Generally, this project was helpful practice for learning to simplify wording and graphics.

As for the motion graphic, simply the act of practicing and experiencing trial and error allowed for me to gain experience and learn efficiency with video editing. For the first time, I learned to animate vector graphics in Adobe Premiere. Though at first I struggled with animation timelines and timing consistency, I eventually learned better methods for completing these tasks.

Performance Evaluation

Since I was familiar with the programs I worked with, I did not need to focus my time on learning a new program. However, I still learned new things and improved despite this familiarity. I also felt that I had a good understanding of colors and how to integrate them in a way that emphasized the message, with reds contrasting the blues. As mentioned previously, learning to make a wireframe (shown to left) took a few tries, but proved to be very helpful in the end. Along with the wireframe, learning more organized work habits as I gained experience in the programs helped me to be more efficient with time.

In the future, I would like to learn a better method for organizing my tracks in Adobe Premiere Pro, as working with 28 tracks became hard to manage. I would also like to practice more with vector animations as I had some issues looping certain animations and keeping their motions consistent. The pacing of my video felt a bit too fast as well, so I aim to to learn better pacing for future projects. Overall, I struggled with time management as organization became progressively cluttered, and therefore aim to practice better organization in the future to help save time.

Wireframes

The infographic and motion graphic project was a helpful lesson in learning how to convey information in a condensed and direct manner. It also allowed me to learn better habits of organization and efficiency. Though I felt competent in the programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Premiere Pro, I still learned a lot and left room for future improvement. Despite my struggles with managing my time, I still managed to get the final resulted I wanted.
