National Geograpic

2020

The purpose of the National Geographic typography project was to create a magazine, cover to back, in the same style as the official National Geographic magazines. Mine in particular was created to present the liveliness and sense of community that independent street performers/musicians bring to the communities of New Orleans and generally everywhere in the world all year round. This was done to show their significance and how they play a significant role in celebrations such as Mardi Gras even when giant parades and festivals are occurring, as well as during everyday life.

Creative Process

When starting off this project, I needed to educate myself on how National Geographic usually structures and presents their magazines. I then had to decide on a topic that I found to be unusual, fascinating, and attention-getting. I emotionally presented this magazine to be more uplifting and to bring attention to seemingly mundane things to contrast with large events going on in the world. I also researched official National Geographic magazines as well as a variety of other magazines to better help properly execute this project. For planning, I organized my project in Adobe InDesign at first by laying out the pages with placeholder text boxes and images. The rest of the project completion was executed by starting off with making my own covers and back covers in Photoshop, then onto the interiors and the final touches all in InDesign.

Tools & Elements of Design

Using Adobe InDesign, I utilized its many tools and was especially able to make great use of its gridlines, margins, columns, and master pages. The gridlines allowed for me to align images and textboxes evenly. The margins and columns let me keep consistency in how I aligned my text and images from page to page, along with having the master pages able to set these margins and columns only once and consistently repeat them on however many pages. I also gathered many references of real magazines and those by National Geographic. The official National Geographic logo and RGB color for the yellow border was also used when creating the cover pages in Photoshop. Throughout the entire time I made sure to keep in mind the many principles of design, especially contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.

Performance Evaluation

Considering I was very new to Adobe InDesign and layout and typography design, I endured many struggles that proved to be a crucial learning experience for me. The main issues I ran into involved figuring out how to use the many tools, such as the master pages and columns and grids, and how to align everything properly. Once I picked up on things and my proficiency increased, I feel that I learned to enjoy the process as well. I am very fascinated by the idea of creating a magazine, let alone a National Geographic one, as it allows for the integration of photography and imagery with textual information. I found that striking the balance between image and text to be fun and rewarding.
